O'Neil was in high school when she took part in 2005 to be a part of the third Canadian Idol season. She was able to advance into the top 100 rounds since the judges were impressed at her singing performance. O'Neil was praised highly by her judges. She was a victim of significant loss during the top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals after she was placed in the bottom three spots and the bottom two spots and bottom two, respectively. The judges were stunned by the results and instructed the crowd to vote for contestants like Melissa O'Neil, who had the strongest singing skills. O'Neil has been always delivering top performances ever since, has always finished in the top three. Her two additional performances on September 7,2005, in which O'Neil made it to the final two in the finals of the competition, Werner reportedly forecast that morning newspapers would report O'Neil's victory over Rex Goudie in the finals. She became her third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil received a phone call right away from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, congratulating on her triumph on Canadian Idol.
